The Tessellation Workshop for Children is a hands-on creative learning experience where mathematics and art come together through pattern, shape, and design.

Led by Richa Ghansiyal, this workshop introduces children to the fascinating world of tessellations — repeating patterns made from one or more shapes that fit together without overlaps or gaps. Through observation, discussion, and making, participants begin to understand how geometry can become a tool for artistic expression.

The workshop starts by introducing the geometric principles behind tessellations. Children explore how shapes interact, how edges align, and how repeating forms can cover a surface seamlessly. These ideas help them see mathematics not just as numbers and formulas, but as a visual and creative language.

Participants then look outward to discover tessellations in the world around them. From tiles and built surfaces to textiles, decorative motifs, and everyday patterns, they observe how humans have long used geometric repetition to create beauty, order, and design.

The hands-on making segment invites children to create their own tessellations using simple materials such as paper, scissors, and colours. Through cutting, arranging, repeating, and refining, they experiment with form and build their own unique patterned compositions.

This tessellation workshop makes abstract geometric concepts tangible and enjoyable. It encourages children to think spatially, observe patterns more carefully, and experience how mathematics can be playful, artistic, and deeply connected to design.

What children explore:

• Basics of tessellations and repeating patterns

• Geometric construction and shape relationships

• How shapes fit together without gaps or overlaps

• Tessellations in architecture, textiles, and design

• Pattern-making through hands-on experimentation

• Math as a visual and creative process

Workshop format:

• Introduction to geometric principles

• Observation of tessellations in everyday surroundings

• Guided creative exploration and making

• Paper-based pattern design activity

• Reflection on math, art, and design connections

Why this workshop matters:

• Helps children experience math through making

• Builds visual, spatial, and geometric understanding

• Connects design thinking with mathematical ideas

• Encourages creativity through structured exploration

• Makes abstract concepts easier to grasp through art

About the expert:
