STEM 101 Workshop: Tools and Measurement is a hands-on learning experience that introduces children to the fundamentals of measurement through practical activities, observation, and scientific thinking.

Led by Clifford Prince, this workshop helps participants understand how measurement shapes the way we study and describe the world. Children explore key quantities such as length, mass, temperature, time, volume, and density using both simple tools and more advanced scientific instruments.

Through guided activities, participants learn how to use rulers, measuring tapes, callipers, thermometers, and stopwatches with care and accuracy. They begin to understand the importance of precision, consistency, and error awareness in collecting meaningful data.

The workshop also introduces advanced measuring instruments through demonstrations and discussion. Children are exposed to tools such as seismometers, GPS devices, anemometers, hygrometers, rangefinders, barometers, and pressure gauges, helping them connect basic measurement concepts to real scientific and real-world applications.

Practical activities extend these ideas further. Participants explore surface area and volume through design-based thinking, and measure the volume and density of irregular objects through observation and calculation. Throughout the session, they record findings, compare results, and begin to see how data supports scientific inquiry.

This STEM measurement workshop builds foundational scientific literacy while making tools and measurement feel active, relevant, and approachable.
