The Room Camera Obscura Workshop for Children is an immersive photography and optics experience where children transform an entire room into a working camera obscura.

Led by Mrinal Bahukhandi, this workshop introduces participants to one of the foundational principles of photography by showing how light can travel through a small opening and project an image onto a surface. Instead of building a small model, children experience this phenomenon at room scale, making the concept dramatic, memorable, and easy to understand.

As the room darkens and the outside world appears projected inside, children witness the science of image formation in real time. This hands-on setup helps them understand how early image-making worked and how cameras are fundamentally based on the behavior of light.

The workshop combines scientific curiosity with visual wonder. It encourages observation, questioning, and a deeper appreciation of how something as simple as light entering a dark space can create an image.

What children explore:

• How a camera obscura works

• How light travels and forms images

• The relationship between darkness, aperture, and projection

• Early principles behind photography

• Observation through immersive optical experience
