The Hydraulic Electromagnet Workshop is a hands-on STEM experience designed to help children explore physics and engineering through building, testing, and creative problem-solving.
Hosted by EarthLab Club, this workshop invites young learners to build a working hydraulic electromagnet from scratch using syringes, IV tubes, batteries, copper wire, and nuts. Guided step by step by Clifford Prince, Research Fellow at the Indian Institute of Remote Sensing, participants learn how simple machines, hydraulic pressure, levers, and electromagnetic induction work in a way that feels practical and exciting.
Rather than approaching science as theory alone, this workshop turns learning into an active process. Children experiment with materials, observe cause and effect, and understand how mechanical movement and magnetic force can work together in one functional model.
This hydraulic electromagnet workshop also encourages creativity, teamwork, and design thinking. As children build and test their own working device, they learn to collaborate, ask questions, solve challenges, and gain confidence in making science with their own hands.
Each participant takes home their self-built model along with extra materials for continued exploration, making the workshop both a learning session and an ongoing invitation to experiment further.
