The Hands-On Woodworking Workshop for Children introduces young learners to design, material exploration, and craftsmanship through real tools and guided making.

Hosted as part of the Young Creators Programme, this workshop invites children to work directly with wood while learning the fundamentals of measurement, shaping, assembly, and design thinking. Rather than approaching design as theory alone, the session helps participants understand material through touch, observation, and construction.

Led by Richa Ghansiyal, the workshop begins with an introduction to the properties of wood and the basic tools used in woodworking. Children learn how different materials behave, how tools interact with them, and why careful handling, planning, and precision matter in any making process.

A strong emphasis is placed on safety, especially for first-time users of woodworking tools. Participants are introduced to essential safety practices that help create a secure and confident environment for exploration. This foundation allows children to engage in the making process with care and attention.

The workshop also connects woodworking to design history and traditional craftsmanship. Through references to artisanal practices and the study of wood samples, children begin to understand wood not just as a building material, but as a resource with cultural, practical, and aesthetic significance.

As the session develops, participants explore the differences between natural timber and processed wood materials. They are introduced to hardwoods, softwoods, MDF, and plywood, along with examples of where each material is commonly used. This helps children build material awareness alongside design understanding.

In the hands-on segment, children work with essential tools such as hacksaws, manual drills, hammers, glue, and nails. Under guided supervision, they practice cutting, shaping, sizing, assembling, and sanding wood to create their own finished wooden pieces.

This hands-on woodworking workshop is not only about learning to use tools. It is also about helping children think through making. The workshop brings together design, mathematics, sustainability, and problem-solving in one tangible experience, showing how real learning happens when ideas are tested through materials.
